Dental Pain

A female patient lying on my dental chair with a swollen face and a night spent in pain and agony tells me, “labour pain was better than this dental pain!”

While the male inside me just gave a bewildered look, the dentist within me could absolutely empathize with her.

From a dull gnawing pain to sharp shooting pain, from difficulty in opening the mouth to throbbing pain on having anything hot, cold or sweet, dental pain can be quite a nightmare.

From a young age itself , a correct technique of brushing should be taught and a regular habit of brushing before going to sleep MUST be inculcated in every young individual.

My instructions to every patient of mine at their last visit to me is simple – please get a dental checkup done annually and brush twice daily. Don’t hesitate in contacting your dentist if you have food lodgement between teeth or are experiencing sudden sensitivity issues to hot, cold and sweet food. A minor cavity or a small gap between two teeth is easily manageable by a dental filling rather than avoid visiting a dentist and then go in for a root canal procedure or even worse, an extraction.

Mild sensitivity issues which also could be related to climate change can easily be managed by the use of an anti sensitive toothpaste as well.

The worse thing to do whilst experiencing dental pain is to follow home remedies! We always have that one person in our family, who will insist you do warm water gargles or ice compression from outside. This infact, aggravates dental pain. You would get momentary relief but the hot or cold could be a stimuli to trigger the dental nerve and the pain one experiences then is intolerable. I have come across patients who besides the above mentioned home remedy use a clove to press it against the ailing tooth or believe it or not, applied nail polish on a tooth as suggested by some family member( no jokes).. and all this made me wonder, wouldn’t it just be easier and faster to visit your dentist instead and let someone who has worked hard and studied the science diagnose you and treat you?

Until next time, brush twice, be wise and don’t miss that annual appointment with your dentist.
